So you want to customize your Cybertruck, but where should you start? Full color change, a few accents, or clear protection? Each path has a different cost, time commitment, and difficulty level. This guide breaks down all three so you can pick the right first project for your truck, your budget, and your skills.
Option 1: Clear PPF (Protect the Stainless Look)
Best for: owners who love the raw stainless steel and want to keep it that way.
The Cybertruck's stainless body is tough, but it still shows fingerprints, smudges, swirl marks, and rock chips, and it's hard to correct scratches in brushed stainless. Clear paint protection film keeps the factory look while adding a self-healing barrier that's much easier to clean.
- Difficulty: moderate. Clear film is forgiving visually because small imperfections are hard to see.
- Time: a full body is a multi-weekend project. Partial coverage takes an afternoon or two.
- Protection: the highest of the three options.

Option 2: Full Color Change (The Head-Turner)
Best for: owners who want a completely different truck.
A full color change is the biggest visual upgrade you can make. Nardo Grey, Gloss Black, Matte Black, chameleon shifts, pearlescent whites, and bold colors like Ruby Red or Mamba Green transform the truck from every angle. You can do it two ways:
- Color change PPF: new color plus self-healing protection, with a longer life (often 5+ years). See our Carlas® PPF Cybertruck kits and Color Change PPF DIY Kits.
- Color change vinyl: a lower-cost way to get the look, typically lasting 3–5 years. See our pre-cut vinyl wraps.
- Difficulty: moderate to advanced. Color makes seams and edges more visible, so careful alignment matters.
- Time: plan on two to three weekends for a first-timer.
- Protection: high with PPF, light with vinyl.
Not sure what color? Try it first in our Cybertruck 3D Configurator.
Option 3: Accents (The Easiest Way In)
Best for: first-timers, owners on a budget, or anyone who wants a subtle custom look.
Accents are small, high-impact pieces: blacked-out pillars, a contrasting tonneau edge, headlight tint or protection, decals, or a carbon fiber look on select panels. They're the fastest way to make the truck feel custom and the best way to learn how film behaves.
- Difficulty: easy. Small pieces are much more forgiving.
- Time: an afternoon.
- Protection: limited to the areas you cover.

How to Decide
- You just took delivery and love the stainless: start with clear PPF. Protect it before the first rock chip.
- You want people to stop and stare: go full color change, and choose PPF if you want protection too.
- You've never wrapped anything: start with accents or headlights, then move up to a full kit.
- You want the best of both: clear PPF on the body plus color accents on pillars or trim.
Tools You'll Want for Any Project
No matter which path you pick, a good squeegee, slip and tack solutions, microfiber towels, a heat gun, and a sharp blade make the job easier. Our PPF/Vinyl Installation Tool Kit covers the essentials in one box.
Our Recommendation
If you're unsure, the most popular path is simple: start small, then go big. Do an accent or headlight project to learn the technique, then commit to a full clear or color change kit once you're comfortable. Because all of our kits are pre-cut specifically for the Cybertruck, every step up is a manageable DIY project.

FAQ
Can I put color film over clear PPF later? It's better to choose one film for each panel. If you think you'll want color eventually, color change PPF gives you both protection and the new look in a single layer.
Can I mix finishes? Absolutely. Many owners run clear PPF on the body with matte or carbon fiber accents on the pillars, mirrors, or tonneau edges for a two-tone look.
Is a DIY job as good as a shop? With good prep and patience, a DIY install on the Cybertruck's flat panels can look excellent. The pre-cut pieces remove most of the risky trimming that makes other vehicles difficult.
What if I mess up a panel? Because every kit is cut by panel, you can replace a single piece without redoing the truck.
